Passionate, charismatic, Apollonian. Roberto Bolle is the artist who gave the art of dance the enthusiasm reserved so far for pop stars: the Italian étoile who brought the ballet even closer to the general public and who through the beauty of the movement has been able to reveal in surprisingly the communicative power of dance.

Francesca Pedroni’s film guides us through the “Roberto Bolle and Friends” gala in three places symbol of Italian cultural heritage: the Arena of Verona, the Teatro Grande of Pompeii, the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. A formidable tour to discover the great interpretations of Roberto Bolle through exclusive images from the stage and from behind the scenes of the shows.

But who is Roberto Bolle? And how did he become an iconic character, a trendy artist, a man loved and followed by millions of fans? Roberto Bolle. The art of dance is a journey with the artist on the occasion of the exclusive tour in fabulous outdoor theaters, pride of the cultural heritage of our country. A tour with Roberto Bolle and his “Friends”, ten exceptional dancers from around the world chosen by Bolle himself to bring dance closer to an audience of thousands of spectators: Nicoletta Manni, from the Teatro alla Scala, Melissa Hamilton, Eric Underwood, Matthew Golding of the Royal Ballet of London, the twins Jiři and Otto Bubeníček, respectively of the Semperoper Ballet of Dresden and of the Hamburg Ballett, Anna Tsygankova of the Dutch National Ballet of Amsterdam, Maria Kochetkova and Joan Boada of the San Francisco Ballet, Alexandre Riabko of the Hamburg Ballett . Stages of this journey are the Teatro Grande di Pompei, a place that thanks to Bolle has opened up to ballet and dance, the Arena di Verona, with its extraordinary audience of 14,000 people, the Teatro delle Terme di Caracalla in Rome, with its centuries-old, imposing ruins to set the stage for the performance.

From athletic preparation to the rehearsal of the show, from the organization of the tour to the choice of the artists and the pieces of the shows, Roberto Bolle. The art of dance offers an exceptional opportunity to move within emotions, fatigue and joy, the continuous comparison with oneself, which dance sets in motion with its constitutive energy. To enrich the film, interviews, shots of the various work phases, shows, personal reflections of the artist, in an attempt to deepen the theme of the totalizing relationship between a man and his art. Because Bolle, workaholic of the discipline, relies on dance fully accepting what it imposes on the body and lifestyle, embracing it as a dispenser of harmony and balance, as a source of constant rebirth. A gift for the spirit, to be cultivated, day after day without discounts, a creed to be shared with the public that Bolle, especially today, in this historical conflictual moment, lives as his task as an artist.

Francesca Pedroni explains: “I know and follow Roberto Bolle from his first successes at La Scala. Twenty years old, he enchanted everyone by dancing his first Romeo, a part that made him conquer, at a very young age, the role of first dancer in the theater. A natural, princely elegance, as a perfect danseur noble, a beauty as an art manual, perfect for the classic and neoclassical lines, which, however, did not prevent him, rather he pushed him to get involved even in roles with a tormented personality such as Onegin or Don José. And he came out victorious. We have seen him grow, become étoile della Scala, but also an extraordinary pop star able to make the masters of the choreography of the past and present known to a novice audience. Whatever he does or says is simply viral. Accompanying Roberto Bolle on tour at the Arena di Verona, at the Teatro Grande di Pompei and at the Teatro delle Terme di Caracalla in Rome was a magnificent adventure. «Dance – he says – is the fire inside me. He trained me, gave me an identity. I owe the man I am now to dance. “An endless love that is the soul of the “Roberto Bolle and Friends” gala, born in the footsteps of Rudolf Nureyev, the artist who many years ago promoted the formula of friends in dance and who for the Italian étoile is still a figure of fundamental reference”.
